How long should it take to study mandatory A group subjects?

Mandatory A group subjects are recommended to be studied in the first four semesters, that means in the first two years of studying. 

How many A group subjects must a student take?

The student must choose at least one study subject from all four study area subgroups (at least 16 credits), without choosing a subject that is in the same field of study as the study program he/she is studying. The student needs to choose one subject from the following subgroups of study areas:

  1. Biomedical, physical and technological sciences;
  2. Humanities;
  3. Social sciences;
  4. Arts.

For example, if a student studies the study program of Lithuanian Philology and Publishing, he cannot choose the same field of study in Group A subject “Literature”.

How many subjects does a student have to take from the foreign language subgroup of Group A?

From the subgroup of foreign languages, which consists of compulsory subjects of English and other foreign languages ​​taught at the University, the student must choose not less than 12 credits and not more than 24 credits.

How many levels of English are required to take?

Students must choose their English language level according to the following rules:

  1. having started studying English from a higher level than A1, must reach the C1 level of academic English;
  2. having started studying English from level A1, must reach level B2 of academic English;
  3. who have C1 level academic English competencies, must study a higher level of English or other foreign languages with a volume of at least 12 credits but no more than 24 credits.

How is the level of English language learning determined?

The level of learning English is determined by the results of the English language test passed at the Institute of Foreign Languages and the English language evaluations in the school leaving certificate. Students who scored 90 percent or higher in the English state matriculation exam may not take the English language placement test. They study English by choosing any English subject at the C1 or C1/C2 level. Competence at level C1 is credited to students who have submitted documents certifying competence at level C1 (standardized English language tests or certificates of education in English).

Is it mandatory for a student to study foreign languages if his knowledge of English corresponds to the C1 level?

Yes, students who have started studying at the University and have C1 level competencies in academic English must study a higher level of English or other foreign languages with a volume of at least 12 credits but no more than 24 credits.

Examples of options:

  • If the student has passed the English language test and his competencies correspond to level A1, he will have to reach level B2 of academic English, which means he will have to study at levels A1, A2, B1, and B2.
  • If the student has passed the English language test and his competencies correspond to the B1 level, he will have to reach the C1 level of academic English, which means the compulsory selection of English B1, B2 and C1 levels.
  • If the student has passed the state English exam with 90 percent or more, he can take the test and count at C1 level and study at least 2 levels of any language, if not, study C1 level English and any other foreign language.

What if there are free credits left for language studies?

The remaining free credits can be used by the student to choose English language studies higher than C1 level, other foreign language studies or freely optional study subjects (group B subjects).

How many group B subjects do you need to take?

Group B – alternative introductory subjects of study areas taught in a study program other than the one studied by the student. The credits allocated for this group (16 credits) can be used by the student to freely choose study subjects not only from B but also from the A group. The list of subjects is published every academic year.

For example, if a student studies the study program of Lithuanian Philology and Publishing, he cannot choose the same field of study in Group A subject “Literature” and Group B subject “Fundamentals of Contemporary Linguistics”.

Can a student not take group B subjects?

Yes, the student may not choose any subject from the list of group B subjects, but instead, choose other optional subjects of the study program not studied by the student. If you are studying in a minor or Academia Cum Laude individual study program, the credits allocated to group B can be used for the study of study program subjects, which means that Group B subjects will be replaced by subjects and credits of the adjacent or individual study program in the study plan.

Does the student have to study computer literacy at the University?

The student must study the subject of Computer Literacy (4 credits) if:

  1. does not have an ECDL (European Computer Driving License),
  2. has not passed the state maturity examination of information technologies with a positive score,
  3. did not pass or did not pass the computer literacy test organized at the University.
