How do students evaluate distance learning?

In April of this year, the Student Representatives of Vytautas Magnus University (VMU SR) initiated a survey, the aim of which was to find out how, in the opinion of students, distance learning takes place, what difficulties have they encountered. A total of 813 respondents took part in the survey, most of them first-year students.

The majority (68%) of the students surveyed said that teachers successfully organized video lectures.

More than half (51%) of the respondents claim that they face technical interruptions during video lectures: sound disappears, poor video quality, difficulties in connecting to a video conferencing room.

51% of the surveyed students have study subjects that include practical classes (laboratory work, rehearsals, etc.), more than half of them answered that practical classes are implemented remotely by organizing appropriate alternatives: 75% of respondents stated that these alternatives correspond to what was done during the practical sessions.

The majority of students (79%) state that teachers provide enough material for distance learning and enough information (81% of respondents) about assessments (midterms, tests). However, 34% of respondents said they had tests that did not match the time allotted to them.

“We are glad that the students actively participated in the survey and expressed their opinion with arguments,” says Gintarė Jurelytė, the coordinator of the VMU SR Academic Affairs Committee. The distance learning process at Vytautas Magnus University is quite smooth, but there are also problem areas, so systematized student comments on subjects and lecturers are sent to the Rector, Vice-Rectors, the Department of Studies and the Deans of Faculties. We hope that they will be resolved soon.“
